Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to an assault on a young man outside the side entrance of Whelan's, a popular Dublin pub and concert venue, on Sunday.

A man (22) was assaulted outside the side door of the pub on Camden Row between 1am and 1.15 am.

He was brought to St James's Hospital where it was discovered that he had a serious head injury as a result of the assault. The man was transferred to Beaumont hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

He is in a serious but stable condition in Beaumont Intensive Care Unit.

Gardaí are asking members of the public who were in the area at the time of the assault and may have witnessed the incident to contact them at Kevin Street Garda station on 01 6669400.
