The Garda Commissioner has decided to install screens in Garda cars used for escorting prisoners after an attack on three gardai in Donegal yesterday.

Mr Pat Byrne directed yesterday that the screens - similar to those used in New York taxis - be put in as soon as possible. The incident took place at 9 a.m. and involved a prisoner being brought from Mountjoy Prison in Dublin to a court in Donegal. There were three gardai with him.

At Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, the prisoner produced an improvised knife, held it to the throat of a garda in the front seat and demanded to be freed. He was overpowered by the other gardai, one of whom sustained a cut face.
