A GARDA received a letter from the Revenue Commissioners asking him to account for a bogus non- resident account held in his name at a branch of a building society in the west of Ireland.

Revenue said it had been given this information by the building society.

The man said he had never had such an account and sought compensation for upset, distress and trauma.

The ombudsman found that the account belonged to someone else with the same name.

The building society had made a mistake.

He awarded the garda €2,500 in compensation and said he was fully justified in feeling wronged.
