Gardai believe four masked men may have used a shotgun stolen from a Co Longford house in an attack on a 75 year old man in the same area. Mr Brian Duffy, of Dring, near Granard, was held up with a sawn off shotgun and beaten ever the head with a wooden baton during a raid on his house at about 10 p.m. on Sunday. The four men, who were wearing balaclavas, stole £300, the elderly victim did not alert neighbours until 10 a.m. yesterday.

A nearby house was raided between 9 p.m. and midnight on Sunday and a sawn off shotgun and ammunition were stolen.
