A man whose wife drove off the pier at Kinvara, Co Galway, killing the couple's two children and herself has been awarded €110,000 in damages by the High Court.

Mr Roy Palmer took a case against the Western Health Board and the former head of the Psychiatric Unit at University College Hospital in Galway.

Catherine Palmer and daughters Jennifer and Louisa died in March 2000 days after being released from a psychiatric hospital. The case was struck out after liability was admitted. Mr Palmer has donated the money to charity.
