Iarnrod Eireann expects to introduce a new commuter light rail service to link Galway city with satellite towns such as Oranmore and Athenry within the next five years.

The company has sought funding for a light rail service due to a massive growth in population in towns outside Galway. It is envisaged that the timing of the commuter trains would greatly ease traffic congestion.
