The Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht has announced the end of road improvement grants for Gaeltacht areas.

The Estimates for Gaeltacht improvement schemes, including road improvements, rose from £3.16 million last year to £3.35 million in 1996. A spokesman for the Department said the funds would be directed towards a number of "higher priority" projects, such as harbour improvements. It was hoped that local authorities would look after road improvements.
