The proposed closure of the Guinness-owned Dundalk packaging plant set for September has been pushed further back following the latest round of discussions between union representatives and management yesterday, writes Elaine Keogh.

A spokesman for the drinks company said: "We have now agreed to an extension to the timescales we had originally set out to allow discussions with the unions to progress."

"This means that the packaging plant will not close at the end of September but we are not prepared to spell this out any further as our focus from here on will be on the discussions with the unions," he added.
