The funeral of has taken place of Garda Ciarán Jones, who lost his life while warning oncoming motorists of flood danger near his home in Co Wicklow during torrential rain on Monday night.

His parents  Brenda and John, brother Alan and sister Michelle, as well as his girlfriend Clare Kennedy, were the chief mourners at St Brigid's Church in Manor Kilbride, Co Wicklow.

Several hundred other mourners, including Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinane attended the funeral Mass.

Addressing mourners, Fr Padraic McDermott said Gda Jones was a "beautiful person" and a "leading light in our community".

He paid tribute to the "confident cheerful and helpful" young man who "lived by the old values".
Gda Jones was buried in the adjoining cemetery with full Garda honours.
