Fund set up to save Mayo lake

Residents around Lough Cullin in Co Mayo are setting up a fighting fund to save the lake from pollution

Residents around Lough Cullin in Co Mayo are setting up a fighting fund to save the lake from pollution. It is one of the best known wild trout fisheries in Europe.

Hoteliers, guesthouse owners, anglers and farmers are this week serving notice on Mayo Co Council that three months will be allowed to have work started on tertiary treatment facilities at Castlebar sewerage works or court proceedings will be instituted.

The concerned groups claim that in the absence of tertiary treatment, phosphates are spilling into the Castlebar river, which flows into the lake, and into the general Moy system, causing intensive enrichment and an algae growth.
