A convicted murderer who has been on the run for over a week handed himself in to the PSNI today.

Police initiated a man hunt last Monday when Jonathan Peter Neill (34) absconded. He was living in the community as part of a phased release scheme from Maghaberry Prison, Co Antrim, when he disappeared from the Cookstown area.

Neill was convicted of murdering a lodger who was living with his parents in 1991 when he was 16 years old and also has convictions for burglary.

A spokesman for the Prison Service said he handed himself over to authorities voluntarily this afternoon.

He has now been returned to Maghaberry Prison.
