Tax on petrol and diesel should be graded to reflect the size of haulage companies and the state of the roads they travel on, the Green Party has said. The party's spokesman on economic and social affairs, Mr Dan Boyle, said these measures would bring about a degree of equity which was lacking. "There are areas for Government manoeuvre while still maintaining the need and importance for high taxes on transport fuel," he said.

He said struggling industries, such as fishing, could also be given appropriate compensation and all public service vehicles, including taxis, should be able to claim the VAT on fuel back.
