VITROLLES, France - The extreme right wing National Front party yesterday officially took control of the town hall in Vitrolles where it won a sweeping municipal election victory last week. Ms Catherine Megret, wife of the National Front deputy leader, Mr Bruno Megret, was elected mayor at the first meeting of the new Front dominated municipal council.

The outgoing Socialist mayor, Mr Jean Jacques Anglade, led left wing councillors in a symbolic walk out from the session, whistling Le Chant des Partisans, the hymn of France's second World War Resistance movement. Several hundred left owing militants massed outside the building chanting protests against the National Front.
