A French soldier has been killed and two others wounded after clashes with insurgents in Afghanistan, the president's office said today.

The latest death means 29 French soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001, when US-led coalition forces first entered the country.

The death took place in a valley to the northeast of the capital of Kabul, the Elysee office said in a statement.

Last month was the worst for foreign troops engaged in Afghanistan, where presidential elections are due to be held this month.

Casualties spiked after thousands of US and British troops launched operations in the southern Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and the centre of Afghanistan's opium production.
