The environmental group Greenpeace said yesterday it had found abnormal levels of radioactivity in the sea near a French nuclear plant, which it said was dumping radioactive waste into the English Channel.

The group said it was sending samples of the tainted sea-water to countries which sent nuclear waste to be reprocessed at the La Hague plant, near Cherbourg, in north-western France.

"It is now clear that the whole sea environment has been contaminated," the group said at a press conference aboard its vessel the Rainbow C, off the French coast.
