A French member of parliament from the ruling UMP party killed a woman with a gun before taking his own life with the same weapon today, a local prosecutor said.

Jean-Marie Demange (65), from the Moselle region of eastern France, shot the 43-year-old divorcee in the head with an automatic gun on the balcony of her home before heading indoors to take his own life, said Jean-Francois Mailhes.

"A violent dispute took place between Jean-Marie Demange and this young lady who was 43 years of age," Mailhes said.

The connection between Demange and the woman, who had two children, had yet to be determined although a romantic liaison could not be ruled out, he said.
