Paris - Thousands of angry jobless people stepped up the pressure on France's Socialist government yesterday, staging a day of action across the country for better benefits.
In central Paris, police fired tear-gas shells to try to dislodge several hundred protesters occupying a commodities market who had barricaded themselves inside.
