New York - The UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, yesterday appointed a French defence expert, diplomat and author to the key post of head of UN peacekeeping, supervising 15 missions around the world.

Mr Jean-Marie Guehenno, a senior French civil servant, currently chairs the board of France's Institute of Advanced Studies on National Defence.
