PARIS - A controversial attempt to give anti-abortion campaigners new access to French courts collapsed yesterday after virulent protests from left-wing and womens' groups and trades unions.

A French parliamentary committee voted unanimously to ditch an amendment which would have allowed anti abortion groups to take legal action for "public incitement" to abortion.
