Details of a new scheme to provide free college places for unemployed workers were announced yesterday, writes TIM O'BRIEN

Under the proposed scheme 1,500, part-time college places are to be provided at the start of the coming academic year.

Prospective students will be entitled to retain their social welfare payments while on the course. Tuition fees will not be charged for the courses which will vary between one and four years in length.
