Lyon - A French minister advised oyster lovers yesterday to swallow as many of the shellfish as possible because oil slicks and storm damage may cause years of shortages.

"I recommend that it's all the more reason to eat those on sale now, because it's not certain that there will be enough in the next few years," the Consumer Affairs Minister, Ms Marylise Lebranchu, said.

French restaurant goers normally love to swallow oysters with a glass of white wine.
