France's central government budget deficit narrowed sharply in the first six months of the year compared with the same period of 2009, helped by a strong rise in tax revenues, data today showed.

The finance ministry said the budget deficit at the end of June stood at €61.7 billion compared with a deficit of €82.4 billion a year earlier, as total revenues rose by 20.7 per cent year-on-year.

The deficit also fell from €67.9 billion reported at the end of May this year, after revenues increased strongly.
