FOURTEEN cases of the potentially fatal food poisoning bacteria E coli 0157 have been identified in Northern Ireland since January, the Northern Department of Health has confirmed.

The provisional figures released by the department do not give any further details and it is not known if anyone has ever died from the bacteria in the North.

The spread of E coli is linked to storing raw and cooked meat together and failing to wash hands before handling food.
