An Iraqi defence ministry spokesperson confirmed the National Guard headquarters in al-Mushahida was attacked but refused to give any details.

A US military spokewoman confirmed that four Iraqi National Guards were killed and up to 80 wounded in a mortar attack on the base.

He was responding to reports of heavy casualties in an attack by insurgents in al-Mushahida, about 30 kilometres from Baghdad.
