Former Fine Gael politician and businessman Myles Staunton died in Westport, Co Mayo, yesterday aged 75.

Former Fine Gael politician and businessman Myles Staunton died in Westport, Co Mayo, yesterday aged 75.

Mr Staunton represented Mayo as a TD during the Liam Cosgrave government of 1973 to 1977. He was defeated in the general election and served in the Seanad until 1982 and later from 1989 to 1992.

He was yesterday described by Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Paddy Burke as a “true parliamentarian, public representative and servant of both the State and Co Mayo”.

His removal will take place in Westport tomorrow evening with his funeral Mass on Saturday.
