The condition of comatose former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon deteriorated further on today, the hospital treating him said.

Mr Sharon has been in a coma since January.

A statement issued by the Sheba hospital near Tel Aviv said that doctors had "reported a deterioration in Mr Sharon's condition."

They said Mr Sharon had a reduction in urine output and that a scan showed he had double pneumonia.

The hospital said the team of doctors had started treating the 78-year old with antibiotics and steroids.
