THE LORD Mayor of Dublin Emer Costello and former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave were among the mourners yesterday at the removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook of Joe Doyle, a former Fine Gael lord mayor, TD and senator, who died at the weekend.

A large number of serving and former politicians from all parties attended the removal.

Among the mourners were the chairman of the Fine Gael parliamentary party Tom Hayes, the party spokeswoman on arts and sport Olivia Mitchell, former leader of the Progressive Democrats Michael McDowell, the president of the Irish Human Rights Commission Maurice Manning, former Fianna Fáil MEP Eoin Ryan and former Supreme Court judge Hugh O’Flaherty.

A large number of former Seanad colleagues including Louis Belton, Gerry Reynolds and Liam Cosgrave jnr attended, as did former Dáil colleagues Fergus O’Brien and John Farrelly.

The chief mourners were the late Mr Doyle’s wife Peggy and his three children, David, Michael and Róisín.
