The Government has promised £1.1 million to the World Food

Programme to help combat hunger in North Korea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Iraq and Kenya.

The Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food,

Mr Noel Davern, announced the donation yesterday at a meeting with Mr

Namanga Ngongi, deputy-director of the programme, who attended the

Famine commemoration in Co Mayo on Sunday. Mr Davern praised the work of the programme, saying it had a special resonance for Ireland on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Famine.
