Five Lithuanian seamen kidnapped from a cargo ship off Nigeria's coast last week have been freed, Lithuania's foreign ministry said today.

The ship owned by the Lithuanian Limarko Shipping Company was attacked by gunmen at the Escravos anchorage last Monday while waiting to be unloaded.

"The foreign minister has received a call from Limarko company saying that all five hostages were free and unharmed," ministry spokesman Rolandas Kacinskas told Reuters.

The crew was being questioned by the Nigerian police and should be back in Lithuania within days after medical examinations, he added.

It was not clear how the hostages were freed, but the foreign minister had earlier said that Lithuania would not pay ransom.
