BRASILIA - Five people have died in a new land conflict in north east Brazil, prompting senior federal officials to travel to the area, a presidential spokesman said.

Mr Jonas Borges of the Rural Landless Workers' Movement (MTS) said that the conflict occurred on Tuesday when 30 gunmen approached a group of 600 landless farmers who were occupying a ranch. A court had determined that the ranch should be returned to its rightful owners.
