Five-gallon drums were thrown from the back of a car to stop a following Garda motorcycle, a court has been told.

A teenage boy who was arrested after the Garda chase at 170km/h across two counties was charged with dangerous driving. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with two counts of dangerous driving on the road between Mullingar and Longford, on Wednesday afternoon last.

A 14-year-old passenger has been charged with endangering traffic, after allegedly throwing up to five five-gallon drums from the back of the car in the path of a pursuing motorcycle garda. A 15-year-old boy who was also in the car was arrested. He pleaded guilty to an offence in Longford, involving the theft of two crates of Budweiser from a supermarket.

Judge Séamus Hughes at Mullingar District Court suggested that Garda motorcycles should be fitted with cameras so the public could see what happened on the roads.

The three boys were granted legal aid and will appear before Judge Hughes in July.
