FIVE MEN who were arrested as part of a police investigation into a gang rape and assault in Co Armagh last week were believed to be vigilantes searching for those behind the incident, a court has been told.

The men, from Lithuania, appeared at court in Lisburn on Saturday charged with conspiring to inflict grievous bodily harm in Portadown on Thursday.

A woman (26) and man (23) were held hostage in a flat in Lurgan, enduring an ordeal from early Wednesday into that evening, amid allegations that the woman was repeatedly raped. The man remains in a critical condition in hospital.

The men were ordered to surrender their passports and observe a curfew.
