Five Lithuanian nationals were remanded in custody after they appeared at a special sitting of Drogheda District Court yesterday.

They were all charged with the unauthorised taking of a car at Main Street, Ballybay, Co Monaghan on Sunday last.

They are Andrius Misinas (31), of Buckingham Street, Dublin; Eivydas Zukas (24), of Hunter's Walk, Hunter's Wood, Rathfarnham, Dublin; Arvydas Bartkevicius (22), no fixed abode; Laimonas Skladaitis (24), of Clonliffe Road, Dublin; and Tauvtuydas Kruckas (23), of The Glade, Oldtown Mill, Celbridge, Co Kildare.

Their solicitor, Gerry Jones, applied for bail. This was objected to by Supt Tom Long, Carrickmacross, who told Judge William Hamill he was seeking to have them remanded in custody as he believed witnesses could be interfered with, the accused might leave the country and more serious charges will follow.

The men were remanded in custody.
