Eight crew aboard a French fishing trawler were rescued early this morning off the coast of Co Cork.

The vessel got into difficulties off Dursey Island last night. It lost power and was at risk of being washed onto the rocks.

The trawler was towed by a tugboat into Castletownbere Harbour at around 5.00am. There were no injuries reported.

Meanwhile, a crew member aboard an Irish Ferries ship en route from Rosslare Harbour to Cherbourg was airlifted to hospital in Wales this morning.

The man, understood to be a 36-year-old Lithuanian, was suffering from severe abdominal pains.

He was winched aboard an RAF helicopter early this morning and transferred to a hospital in Pembrokeshire, where he is said to be in a stable condition.
