The Navy has detained a fishing boat off the Kerry coast on suspicion of breaching fishing regulations.

The Navy has detained a fishing boat off the Kerry coast on suspicion of breaching fishing regulations.

The Le Niamhdetained the UK-registered vessel and its Spanish crew approximately 70 miles south west of Valentia, a Naval Service statement said.

It is being escorted to Castletownbere, Co Cork where it is expected to arrive tonight.

"The vessel was detained on suspicion of technical infringements. On arrival in Castletownbere the fishing vessel will be inspected by Officials of the Department of Marine," the statement added.

It is the 21st fishing boat to be detained by the Naval Service this year. Yesterday, a Spanish vessel was detained off the west coast.
