Firearms, ammunition and cannabis have been seized by gardaí in Limerick following a number of searches in the city today.

Firearms, ammunition and cannabis have been seized by gardaí in Limerick following a number of searches in the city today.

A Garda statement said gardaí conducted "a large number of searches" in the Limerick city area this afternoon.

"The operation was mainly concentrated in the South Hill area of the city and was part of an ongoing investigation into serious crime," the statement said.

"Four firearms, a quantity of ammunition and a quantity of cannabis resin (with an estimated market value of €5,000) were seized."

One man was arrested and he is now detained at Roxboro Road Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, according to the Garda statement.

The search operation began at 2pm and concluded at 7.30pm. Gardaí from Limerick Division were supported by a Garda Dog Unit and the Garda Air Support Unit during the operation.
