A Cavan man had a £200 fine for non payment of road tax reduced to £50 by Judge Donal Lynch in Trim Circuit Court yesterday. Martin Hannigan, of Cootehill was described as the "Pothole Terror" because for several years he painted yellow circles around potholes in Cavan and Monaghan. He had appealed against the fine imposed at Kells District Court.

Hannigan told the judge he had paid arrears in tax and was continuing his campaign to have roads repaired in Cavan. He claimed his car was recently damaged by some of the huge potholes in the county.

Reducing the fine, the judge observed there was no such problem in Co Meath.
