Nearly 50 people have been wounded after a bomb exploded at an opposition rally in Bangladesh's northeastern Sunamganj district, witnesses and private TV networks say.

The bomb went off after a senior leader of the main opposition Awami League party, Suranjit Sengupta, finished speaking at the rally in his Dirai constituency today.

Suranjit, a member of parliament, escaped unhurt, witnesses and media said. Police could not immediately be reached for comment.
