Budapest - The centre-right Fidesz Hungarian Civic Party looks best placed to form a government after the second round of Hungary's two-round elections takes place on May 24th, analysts said yesterday.
Fidesz, which ran a strong second to the ruling Socialists in Sunday's first round, should be able to put together enough parliamentary seats to form a coalition with the agrarian-based Independent Smallholders, a pollster and political analyst, Mr Endre Hann, said.
A forecast compiled by his Median Kft polling organisation gave Fidesz 154 seats in the 386-seat parliament, to 137 for the Socialists, 50 for the Smallholders and eight for the Fidesz-allied Democratic Forum.
The Socialist-allied Alliance of Free Democrats would have 24 and the extreme right Hungarian Justice and Life Party (MIEP), entering parliament for the first time, would have 12.
