Fine Gael has announced that senior party member and former TD, Charles Flanagan, has decided not to contest the forthcoming local elections.

The announcement was made in a statement released this morning by Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD.

Mr Flanagan decided not to stand for the party in order to concentrate on the development of his legal practice.

He will remain a member of the Fine Gael Party and will continue to represent the party as a member of their delegation to the National Forum on Europe.

Mr Kenny thanked Mr Flanagan for his contribution and said he looked forward to his continued support and assistance to rebuild the Party.

Mr Flanagan held the County Laois seat previously held by his father Oliver J Flanagan.

The local and European elections are scheduled to take place on June 6th.
