The son of the late cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Mr Liam Naughten, has been nominated as a candidate for Fine Gael in the general election. His father was killed in a car accident last November.

Mr Denis Naughten (23) will contest the four-seat Roscommon-Longford constituency in which his father once held a seat. He is expected to be Fine Gael's youngest candidate.

Mr John Connor TD and Senator Louis Belton have also received Fine Gael nominations in the same constituency.
