A national scheme of community policing and Neighbourhood Watch should be introduced as a matter of urgency, Fianna Fail's spokesman on labour affairs, Mr Tom Kitt, said yesterday.

Rural unemployed people; could be given jobs through a FAS scheme. Their work would entail caring for the elderly and those living alone.

He suggested a different scheme for urban areas with the long term unemployed working as security personnel to patrol estates at night, keeping in radio contact with gardai.
