Sponsorship by the Israeli embassy of a film to be shown in the Dublin Lesbian and Gay Film Festival has been cancelled by the organisers because of the country's military action in Lebanon.

Director of the Irish Film Institute (IFI) Mark Mulqueen said the decision was taken in light of the current activities of the Israeli government and prompted by the performance of the Israeli ambassador in explaining these acts to the Irish public.

The film - Walk on Water- will still be screened as scheduled. Mr Mulqueen said: "In allowing the screening to go ahead, this is not an act of artistic censorship, something we would be loath to do."

The Israeli Embassy in Dublin could not be contacted for comment today. The embassy's website makes reference to the sponsorship.
