The father of a Limerick man murdered in October 2003 has appeared in court charged in connection with possession of a shotgun and ammunition.

Mr Michael McNamara (44), Old Clare Street, Limerick, appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court yesterday following his arrest on Saturday.

It is alleged that gardaí recovered a double-barrelled sawn-off shotgun and four rounds of ammunition during a search of his van.

Mr McNamara was stopped by gardaí at about 9 p.m. in the Lee Estate in the city during a routine Garda patrol. He was arrested and charged at a special sitting of Limerick District Court yesterday where Judge Terence Finn remanded him in custody until Thursday.

During the brief court hearing it was claimed that Mr McNamara feared for his family's safety. His son, Michael Campbell-McNamara (23) was abducted, bound and gagged before he was murdered and his body left in a a field near Southill in 2003.
