London - The former footballer, Mr Justin Fashanu, committed suicide because he mistakenly feared that US police were trying to track him down over the alleged sexual assault of a teenager, an inquest heard yesterday, Rachel Donnelly writes.

Returning a verdict of suicide, the coroner, Dr Stephen Ming Chan, said Mr Fashanu, who was found hanged in a lock-up garage in east London earlier this year, clearly did not want to cause his family any more pain or distress. He had "sadly decided there was no other way out for him". However, the US police had not brought any charges against him.
