Readers' observations and queriesI spotted a flock of about 20 goldfinches recently feeding on thistles in a field by the canal in Ballyfermot. The most I had seen ever was six on my bird feeders. I was not aware that the feed in flocks.

I noticed a dramatic increase in woodlice numbers this autumn. They seem to be under every large stone and log in increasing numbers. What may have caused their population explosion and do they have a natural predator?

It may be the weather. Shrews, ground beetles, centipedes, spiders and birds are among their most numerous predators.
I witnessed at least three mature otters swimming in the canal at Harold's Cross Bridge, in and around a large flock of swans. They seemed to be waiting for food to be thrown in.

It is hardly likely that anyone is throwing fish to them.
A few weeks ago, in St Anne's Park, Raheny, I saw a caterpillar about 40mm long. It was lemon-yellow with a red/maroon antenna at its rear. I have tried the internet to no avail.

It sounds like the caterpillar of the pale tussock moth.
