Algiers - Seventy armed Islamic extremists have been killed south of the Algerian capital in a five-day operation by security forces, according to press reports.

The security force sweep concentrated on the Larbaa region, 20km south of Algiers, beginning last Wednesday, the daily papers Liberte and El-Khabar reported. They said 50 "terrorists" - the term used for armed Islamic militants - had been killed in the operation.
