The US Supreme Court justice, Ms Sandra Day O'Connor, yesterday rejected a request by Maze prison escaper Jimmy Smyth for the suspension of a court order allowing his extradition to Britain.
A federal judge in California earlier this month signed an order authorising Smyth's extradition and ordered him taken back into custody. A stay would have given Smyth time to pursue his claim for political asylum in the US.
