A middle-aged man, extradited from Britain over alleged sexual offences in Galway in the 1970s, appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court at the weekend.

The man appeared before Judge Mary Fahy on Saturday and was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison.

Insp Michael Coppinger gave evidence of arresting the man at Shannon airport after he had been extradited from London on a European Arrest Warrant. He was taken to Galway’s Mill Street Garda station to face a number of charges.

Insp Coppinger said that when asked if he had anything to say after being charged, he replied that he had nothing to say, on advice.

Judge Fahy remanded him in custody to appear again on Friday.
