Gardaí have uncovered a large quantity of what was described as "high quality" home-made explosives during a search of waste ground in Co Louth.

Approximately five kilos of the substance, which they believe to be ammonium nitrate, was found in a rucksack on waste ground in the Killeen area yesterday afternoon.

A Defence Forces bomb disposal team were called to the scene, which is some five kilometres outside Dundalk.

A Defence Forces spokesman said it appeared to be "high quality home made explosive" and it was removed for further examination.

The area has been sealed off pending further searches this morning.
